Record Participation in the 2024 European Safer Gambling Week, Expanding to 26 Countries

December 11, 2024

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) today announced record-breaking results from the fourth edition of the European Safer Gambling Week, held from 18 to 24 November 2024. This initiative, which included a social media campaign and a specialized events program, showcased the growing commitment of the European sector to responsible gambling, achieving historic levels of participation and broader geographic coverage.

The campaign saw active participation from 195 partners, a 20% increase compared to 2023. Notably, eight national gambling authorities participated, more than doubling the number from the previous year, contributing to the social media campaign or serving as speakers at events.

The initiative also significantly expanded its reach, covering 26 countries—a 30% increase compared to last year. Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine joined for the first time, solidifying the campaign’s pan-European character. Additionally, graphic materials were translated into the local languages of 27 countries, facilitating regional participation.

On social media, the campaign reached 3.1 million users across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X, generating 1,169 posts—a 67% increase compared to 2023.

A cornerstone of this edition was its events program, which featured 20 specialized activities, an 11% increase from the previous year. The events drew a record 4,500 registrations and 3,000 attendees, with discussions focusing on trends such as AI, problem gambling prevalence reporting, and innovations in responsible gambling tools and messaging. The program featured 105 speakers, including representatives from the gambling authorities of Belgium, Denmark, France, and the United Kingdom.

The initiative builds on EGBA members’ year-round commitment to responsible gambling. In 2023, these members sent 67 million safety messages to their European customers. The European Safer Gambling Week amplifies these efforts, fostering greater collaboration among operators, regulators, and harm prevention organizations.

“The success of this edition reflects the sector’s growing commitment to player protection,” said Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of EGBA. “The significant increase in participation, especially from health organizations and regulatory authorities, demonstrates unity in our approach to safer gambling. Through this collaboration, we have reached a record number of Europeans with crucial safety messages. Together, we are making gambling safer and already look forward to building on this success in next year’s edition.”
